An Afternoon With T Michael03.11.09

Been busy with another project and this time it was making a magazine layout with InDesign. Plus, we had to make an article about someone who is working in the design business. In my case, I interviewed one of Bergen’s hottest fashion designers, T Michael. Since I chose the fashion angle, my layout was inspired from different fashion magazines.

The magazine’s name was already decided by the teacher so we had no choice, but to follow it. Blunk means wink in English. Here are the pictures of the layout and the accompanying article. Hope you guys like it!

+ Cover. It’s Odd (my husbandry) on the cover. It’s in black and white with the magazine logo in yellow giving the look and feel of fall.

Michael T. Nartey or T-Michael as known to many is one of the hottest fashion designers in Bergen. He is a man of vision coupled with a matching skill and eye for great design. His outfits are worn by celebrities, socialites and of course people with strong sense of style.

It was early afternoon and I left in a hurry from school. I hastily made my way to the city centre feeling lucky to have this short tête-à-tête with Bergen’s highly esteemed fashion designer, T Michael. Despite his busy schedule, he was positive in regards to the interview and managed to squeeze me in.

I’ve met him before when I was working on a film project since he provided the outfits for the casts. Now, on my second time meeting him, he never ceased to amaze me. He exudes an aura of elegance and grace. He is very friendly and down-to-earth. Talking to him alone can actually spark an inspiration.

He started thirteen years ago with a vision of creating something revolutionary from a fusion of traditional tailoring and contemporary designs. From tailoring he turned it into ready-to-wear or RTW, but suits and dresses are still tailored to fit.

His main studio is in Bergen, but he also has a shop in Oslo. I asked him how he finds Bergen or Norway in terms of fashion, innovation and trend. He told me that geographic location doesn’t hinder creativity or style. Bergen is self-contained and not experimental than Oslo, but it’s brimming with creativity. Infact, his products are a reflection of what Bergen is, a marriage between classic, and traditional with cool and modern design.

In regards to his work inspiration, he gathers it everywhere. He even noted that either you find it or it finds you. As his hands were busy on an outfit, he continued talking. He said that while working in a one piece there came a sudden idea and he made a mental note to do something about it. He added that work begets work.

The future for T Michael is bright and exciting. He is now creating shoes and bags which are also very stylish and sophisticated. Next on his future projects are accessories which are a must have to every man and woman. Life needs embellishments and T Michael will surely bring it on!

Tips for aspiring young fashion designers from T Michael:

Learn it the right way.

- Try to understand the build up of clothing before one starts sketching. When one understands how it’s made up then one can make something revolutionary out of it.

  3. Very Impressive, Chas….! You have so very many “gifts” as an Artist. And it is great to see you using them all….Design, Photography, Writing—just to name three—I hope you got HIGH Marks on this assignment. You deserve them, my dear!

Didot and Palatino fonts works wonder. I love how you manage to keep the Arial fonts on caps on the cover, it adds more of the magazine-look. Plus, the dropcaps on first letter word. LVE it, Charles, just avoid using punctuation marks on a CAPSlock letter tho’.

    • Hi K! Thank you for the compliments as well as the tip. Though can you please point it out where I placed punctuation marks on a CAPSlock letter? I’d be so thankful for that.

      • K.noizki sier:

On your cover page, it reads: ‘This Could Be Major!’ with the exclmation point. Although there is no rule with its usage, it can also add emphasis to a sentence like you’re either “shouting”, “angry” or some other form of excitement.

I guess it is some sort of a habit that we love to use it. Aren’t they so tempting?

  8. Hi Charles, great article! I used to hang out with a bunch of nutty Norwegians in college, dated a fellow from Oslo for about 4 years. BOY were those folks wild. I don’t know how to spell this, but let me know if this sounds familiar at all…”Aaaaa….saaaa… svinger vi posiddeden eyen. Hey, Skaal!” lol

    • Thanks! Hahahha that’s funny. It actually sounds like a drunk man’s song. Anyway, I can spell it correctly for you. It goes like this “og så svinger vi på siden igjen. Hei, skål!” It means “and so we swing on the side again. Hi, cheers!”. That’s the literal translation, but I can ask my father if that’s correct or not hehehehhe. Because sometimes there are words or sentences in Norwegian that cannot be literally translated into English and vice versa.

  9. I thought it meant “here we are swinging on the side of the bottle again”. ??

Have a bra! (Isn’t that how the expression goes? Have a good one?

I super liked the mag cover. B&W and the touch of yellow worked perfectly! I like the shade of yellow that you used because it doesn’t strain your eyes.
